July Flying Carpet 2015

Once in a Blue Moon
in mid June
The FC
waved
ciao to Italy
and bonjour to France

Montmirail felt like home
as the Carpet
rippled
over the welcoming countryside
and
landed
at Maison Conti
maisonconti.com

ascended
hushed streets at dawn

gazed
at the sunrise reflecting windows

a garden shining in dew

returned
past the church...
its tintinnabulation silenced
until the town wakes at 7:00

presented
The Artist as Traveler workshop

made
a pilgrimage
to Chartres

beheld
its spires bristling with gee gaws
and gargoyles

shimmered
in luminescence

and then...
marvelled
at the genius of Raymond Isadore
the inventor of La Maison Picassiette in Chartres
"The House of a million pieces”

Special Thanks to
Nancy, Rick, Ruby, Sydney,

May Flying Carpet 2015

In May the Flying Carpet
Zoomed the Lagoon of Venice

and reveled in the GLORY that was Venice
Queen of the Seas
Empress of Palazzos and Fog and Mystery

But wait!
Anachronism reigns supreme in modern Venice...
Gondoliers in full gondolieregalia
texting on cell phones

Mixed media shrines in the labyrinth of alleyways

“The Circus is in Town"
 The 56th Venice Biennale
growls and squeaks and yells and gasps its last
in the pavilion fun houses
and locations snatched from ruin

Aliens have surely landed amidst the baroque

And at the Arsenale

A moon-walk space suit
made of defunct Zimbabwean money
hovers amidst the ancient stone walls

Statues are everywhere

For all you animal rights activists,
the pigeons are alive and well in Venice...
but not for long...
(No animals were harmed
in the production of this photograph
by Zachariah.)
Juxtapositions making sense

and nonsense

Environments obliterated

and enhanced
in a style vaguely redolent
of complete confusion

Comte de LautrĂ©amont's
classic definition of surrealism:
“As beautiful as the chance encounter
of a sewing machine
and an umbrella
on an operating table.”
comes to mind in the stage set of Venice

“I have felt the wing of the wind of madness”-- Cy Twombly

Again...Special thanks to the Emily Harvey Foundation
for a month-long residency in Venice

June Flying Carpet 2015

In June
The Flying Carpet
gazed into mirrors
and windows
and reflections
in the wonder of Venice

"Mirrors:
each drawing its own
widespread streaming beauty
back into its face" -Rilke

Enormous constellation globes
 Floating star mysteries
In the hush of rooms of dust

Ancient pattern upon pattern

Where air is water and water is air
And space becomes conundrum

And the rooms are abandoned
to grandeur

Special thanks to my companion and navigator Z

April Flying Carpet 2015

Lucy, the girl with kaleidoscope eyes,
took a trip
on The Flying Carpet
to Tucson
flashing on sacred geometry
in the desert

the mirage of "life longing for itself"

Let's become children at play
with new eyes

February Flying Carpet 2015

In February, the Flying Carpet
went spelunking.
New Mexico is a place
filled with people of unique vision.
Ra Paulette,
"a digger of caves and a piler of rocks"
is one of them.

He has dug transformative spaces
in the hoodoos
in and around his home.

He sculpts these sacred spaces
as a celebration.

To be in the earth
and surrounded by earth
with the light streaming in from above

and to be there
with two of the best

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Special thanks to R. and J.

(An excellent short film
entitled Cave Digger
can be seen on Vimeo.)
